Macular Degeneration – tackling the cause of 50% of blindness

Last week was Macular Degeneration Awareness Week and you be surprised to know that it is the leading cause of blindness in Australia, accounting for over 50% of all cases, even more than Glaucoma and Cataracts combined!

Dr John and Pam Stone Director of Education at Blackmores discuss some recent studies which look at some promising ways of improving our eye health. Unfortunately the research did not appear to provide assistance those already suffering from Macular Degeneration (MD) but they did offer hope for people wishing to maintain good general eye health.

Listen as Pam Stone and Dr John discuss how these studies highlight the important role that lutein and omega-3 oils play in maintaining our eyes’ health. From a dietary perspective Pam Stone suggested that we should finding a place for the leafy green vegetables such as spinach in our diet as well the orange and yellow vegetables.

If you would like to know more about these studies you can read more at Blackmores or follow the discussion on Facebook with Dr John D’Arcy.
