Food allergies are on the rise and Dr John explores the possible cause with Dr Pretti Joshi from the Children’s Hospital in Westmead, Sydney. The management of these allergies is becoming more difficult with occurrence of Anaphylaxis increasing. Whilst fatalities from Anaphylaxis remain rare these events are life-threatening and extremely stressful for the sufferer and their families.
Dr Joshi talked about the problems of self-diagnosis and the importance of children being properly diagnosed. Armed with this information parents can develop an appropriate action plan. This is something that needs to be communicated to the child, parents, grandparents and the school. Dr Joshi discusses the likelihood of children growing out of their food allergies and for some target foods, like eggs and milk, the chances are high but for other foods this remains a low 20%.
