Carers – real Australian heroes

Dr John speaks with Terry Stroud one of Australia’s unsung heroes – carers.  For 17 years he cared for his mother after she suffered a stroke. In doing so terry like thousands of other carers made the decision to put his focus on his mother’s needs rather than his personal aspirations. Terry is encouraging us to focus on the amazing role that carers play in our society and the value that they add to our communities.

Terry reminds us that there are more than 2.6 million unpaid carers in Australia who care and support family members and friends who have a disability, mental illness, chronic condition, terminal illness, an alcohol or other drug issue or who are among the frail aged. Carers Week 2012 will runs from Sunday 14 October until Saturday 20 October 2012, so why not get involved?
